Trauma-Sensitive Yoga in Psychotherapy

Reconnecting Mind and Body for Holistic Healing and Somatic Recovery

Trauma, chronic stress, and emotional overwhelm don't just exist in our thoughts—they live in the body. You might notice physical tension, feeling disconnected from your physical self, or experiencing sudden surges of anxiety that words alone struggle to reach.

Integrating Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY) into individual psychotherapy offers a powerful, body-centered pathway to healing. By blending evidence-based talk therapy with gentle, intentional somatic movement, we work directly with your nervous system to restore a felt sense of safety, choice, and control.

There are no forced postures, no physical touch, and no expectations to perform. Instead, the focus is entirely on interoception: your internal experience of what is happening in your body in the present moment. You remain in complete control of your movement, pace, and depth throughout every session.

Unlike traditional studio yoga classes—which often focus on precise posture execution, flexibility, or hands-on adjustments—Trauma-Sensitive Yoga is a clinically adapted somatic practice rooted in neuroscience and trauma recovery.

How Somatic Movement Complements Individual Therapy

Traditional talk therapy helps us process memories, gain cognitive insights, and reframe harmful beliefs. However, because trauma impacts the subcortical regions of the brain that govern physical sensations and instinctual survival responses, incorporating the body helps bridge the gap where talk therapy can sometimes feel stuck. Rebuilding Interoceptive Awareness: Learning to notice physical sensations (like muscle tension, breath rhythm, or warmth) safely, without feeling overwhelmed or reactive. Cultivating Autonomy & Choice: Every movement is offered as an invitation. Practicing making choices about your body in a safe setting rebuilds your sense of personal agency. Nervous System Regulation: Gentle movement combined with present-moment awareness helps expand your window of tolerance, shifting your body out of chronic fight-or-flight or freeze states. Processing Somatic Memory: Providing a safe physical container to gently release stored somatic tension, numbness, or bracing patterns linked to past relational trauma or high stress.

Reclaim Connection with Your Body

No prior yoga experience or flexibility is required. Movements are simple, highly adaptable, and can be performed in standard comfortable clothing while sitting in a chair, standing, or using a mat.

Your body deserves to be a place of safety, comfort, and peace. By integrating gentle, choice-based movement into your therapeutic journey, you can begin to loosen the grip of past trauma and cultivate a renewed sense of wholeness.
